Syrian civil society and International organizations in stabilization and recovery in Syria

Civil society in Syria, in a broad definition including associations, SNOG and local committees, have an essential role in stabilization and recovery processes. In wars against the population which is largely the case in Syria supporting civilian organizations is rightly gaining momentum.

The aim of the proposed challenge is to assess:

  • How civil society organizations are taken into account by International organizations dealing with the Syrian conflict from a humanitarian and/or reconstruction perspective.
  • Contribute to elaborate a strategy to increase the awareness of International organizations on the importance of Syrian civil society in both humanitarian aid and reconstruction.

A central hypothesis of the proposed challenge is that supporting civilians  strengthening civil society is part of basic needs with health, food security, education…

Regarding the method a first step is to assess the implication of civil society in past and currant interventions and action plans. This will provide a basis to discuss strategies to promote civil society in International programs addressing the Syrian conflict. Read more

Qatar Red Crescent

Geo Expertise designed and implemented, in collaboration with local actors, a rehabilitation project of 700 hectares of irrigated land in the Ar-Ruj irrigation scheme in the province of Idlib. The project was funded by the Qatar Fund for Development through the Qatar Red Crescent. Beyond the restoration of the water supply infrastructure the establishment of a water user association was a key component of the project. It can be noted that local actors have played an essential contribution in preventing the interferences of armed groups in the project. The rehabilitation was completed in February 2018 and the irrigation system is managed locally.

Syrian Civil Society Support Program

Humanitarian aid in Syria is by far insufficient and widely considered a tragic failure. Humanitarian aid interventions carried out by international organizations are strongly hindered by a series of obstacles to reach the people in need of assistance. Syrian civil society organizations are some of the most capable bodies to operate in the country. Their work is largely unknown or ignored. Some organizations, mainly confessional charity associations, were created before the conflict; the large majority of these organizations were formed during the conflict. Their members (he or she) are physician, engineer, pharmacist, professor, student, nurse, lawyer, farmer, engine driver..
